August Reads
August was all about easy reads for me. With school starting back, I was looking for an escape from real life. I like to read about other people’s drama since I don’t have any of my own. I read seven books like August, and here are my thoughts.
4/5 Stars
This is book one in a series called the Jansen Brothers. I love the book The Ex-Talk, and thought this might be a bit similar. Everly words as a radio show producer when her dirty laundry accidentally gets aired. Her boyfriend has cheated on her with the assistant and now every listener knows. With the news airing, men are lining up to date her, Bachelorette style. Of course, her handsome boss is making things difficult for her.
I really enjoyed this book, and would read the other books in the series. It was a little slow at times, but overall a good, heart-felt story. A bit of Hallmark with a bit of spice.

Everyone knows I’m a sucker for a good airport romance. I won’t lie – every time I fly, which is pretty often, I sometimes imagine that I could meet Mr. Right in the terminal. This book gave me a little bit of that hope. Ollie is a pet groomer in the airport who keeps catching the eye of a handsome man that she sees every week. They start to go on dates, but dating someone only on a layover is a tough situation. I see myself in Ollie – she’s independent in the “I don’t need a man” kind of way, but can this handsome man change her mind? This is a novella, so it’s super short. I read it in one night while I was relaxing. It took me about three hours. The best part – it’s only $1.99 on Kindle!

Apparently, I was in a novella mood for my August reads. Under One Roof is also a quick read (or listen). The main character in this book is a scientist (love the representation!). Mara inherits a portion of a house from her mentor, but the other portion belongs to her mentor’s grandson, Liam. Now, Liam and Mara have to figure out how to live in the same house while hating each other. You can probably see where this is going…

I watched a Netflix movie that was set in France, and I just felt the need for more France in my life. Mia is an American ballet dancer who wins a spot at summer camp in Paris. She has six weeks to impress everyone there to land a permanent spot in the company. Of course, her rival shows up to steal the show. And who can go to Paris without finding some kind of love connection? It’s a bit predictable, but still a light read that I fully enjoyed.

I was still on my Paris kick when I decided to read this one. I was not impressed. The premise was good, but it was so slow and just fell really flat. Hannah and her boyfriend are heading to Amsterdam on a train. Hannah decides to sit in a different area of the train to get some rest, not realizing the train would split in the middle of the night and head to separate destinations. Hannah ends up in Paris with an annoying (and cute!) passenger, while her boyfriend is in Amsterdam for the wedding. Hannah spends the day seeing the sites of Paris with the annoying stranger, and I’m sure you can see where this is going. There were some really sweet moments, but I don’t love the hints of infidelity.

Riley Sager is one of my favorite thriller authors, but this one did not hit the mark for me. My book club chose this book for our August reads book club meeting, and none of us really enjoyed it. The book was SO SLOW, and all the action happened in the final two chapters. I don’t want to give too much away, but the twist at the end was definitely unexpected, and just not something I enjoyed. The writing was still fantastic, and I will absolutely read all of his future books, but I don’t recommend this one.
4/5 Stars
This is book two in the airport novella series. I read this one super fast as well, but I won’t lie, I didn’t love it as much as the first. It was still good, and four star worthy, and I’m hoping book three will really knock it out of the park. Gia meets a man on a layover and they have a night of passion – well as much passion as you can have in an airport. She knew it would be a one time thing, but months later, she runs into him again. Turns out, he is now going to be working with her critiquing all of her work. They have to figure out how to work together while hating each other, but still dealing with the undeniable spark they once had.
That wraps it up for August reads! Let me know in the moment what you think I should read in September!
